Points on Driving Record

Traffic Ticket Attorney Serving Bucks County Residents

Since 1983, knowledgeable Bucks County traffic ticket lawyer John M. Kenney has represented drivers who have been cited for a broad range of traffic violations, including speeding, reckless driving, and DUI. He has the skill and experience to guide people in the Levittown and Langhorne Pa. areas and elsewhere in Pennsylvania through the process of contesting these citations and charges. Mr. Kenney can help you try to get fines and points reduced or eliminated, and a license suspension lifted or reduced. He makes a concerted effort to resolve these matters as quickly and smoothly as possible under the circumstances.

The Points System for Pennsylvania Drivers

Points matter for Pennsylvania drivers. The state system assesses points to a driver’s record for various traffic offenses, and a driver is at risk of having his or her license suspended once the person reaches six points. The points assessed for an infraction vary depending on the nature of the offense. Running a red light, following too closely, or making an improper U-turn will cost you three points, for example. Speeding means two to five points, depending on how fast you are going and where you get caught.

A driver who racks up six points must take a written safety examination within 30 days in order to avoid a license suspension. If the driver passes the test, he or she will have two points removed from his or her record. Drivers can also get three points removed for each year in which they are not cited for a traffic violation. The second time that a driver reaches six points, he or she must appear at an administrative hearing to determine whether the driver’s license should be suspended for a short term and whether the driver should be required to pass an on-road examination. Any driver who reaches 11 points may have his or her license suspended for up to one year.

The Pennsylvania Department of Traffic handles initial license suspensions. Once a suspension has been ordered, a driver has 30 days to appeal the decision to the Court of Common Pleas. In most cases, a driver whose license has been suspended will start with five points on his or her record once the driving privileges are restored.

Consult a Bucks County Lawyer to Fight a Traffic Ticket

John M. Kenney works on behalf of drivers in many areas of Pennsylvania who are seeking to get points reduced or license suspensions lifted. This means going to court for you so that you do not have to miss work or shirk family responsibilities. By fighting a ticket when it is issued, Mr. Kenney can help people keep their point totals low. He can also work to get multiple tickets combined for points purposes and negotiate with the Department of Traffic to reduce the length of existing suspensions.
