License Restoration

Traffic Ticket Lawyer Representing Bucks County Drivers

Practicing in this area of law since 1983, Bucks County traffic ticket attorney John M. Kenney has represented drivers charged with a wide range of vehicular offenses. Mr. Kenney works to limit the impact of these charges by getting them dropped or reduced whenever possible. He also can assist people in Levittown, Langhorne, and other Pennsylvania communities with getting their licenses restored after they have lost their driving privileges as a result of traffic violations.

The Pennsylvania Points System

Pennsylvania operates under a points system that determines whether a driver loses his or her license. A driver who is found to have committed a traffic offense is assessed a certain number of points, depending on the violation. Speeding, for example, will cost you two to five points, while running a red light is a three-point offense. A driver’s point total decreases over time for every year in which the person is not cited for a traffic violation. Once a driver reaches 11 points, he or she faces license revocation for up to one year.

A person who is convicted of a DUI may also lose his or her driving privileges as a result. Similarly, the state’s “implied consent” law provides that a person arrested for DUI who refuses to submit to a blood, breath, or chemical urine test will have his or her license suspended for up to 18 months.

How to Get Your License Back

If your driver’s license has been revoked, you must go through a restoration process in order to be able to get back behind the wheel. The specific restoration requirements vary based on each individual driver’s circumstances. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation sends a letter to each driver whose license has been suspended. PennDOT lays out in that letter the steps that the driver must take in order to restore his or her license. These may include passing a written driving test.

It is important to understand that the clock does not officially start running on a license suspension until you actually turn over your license to PennDOT. In some cases, however, a driver who has failed to follow this rule may be able to get some or all of the time that he or she has refrained from driving credited to a suspension.
